General Statement

Under supervision, is responsible for performing technical tasks related to the maintenance and operation of a sewage treatment plant.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assists engineering personnel in carrying out wastewater treatment operations; assists in performing field inspections of operations, facilities and equipment and in resolving operating problems; supervises trades personnel in the completion of maintenance activities.
  • Assists engineering personnel in the supervision and inspection of maintenance and construction work and the enforcement of District specifications and safety requirements; collects related data for preparation of correspondence.
  • Assists in planning and directing biosolids receiving, drying and shipping operations at various sludge drying sites; monitors activities and site conditions; determines and records truck and material weight information.
  • Retrieves, microfilms, duplicates, checks, codes and files departmental records; copies and archives contract plans; maintains filing system for records retrieval.
  • Sets up and maintains surveying equipment; assists in establishing and recording survey information such as lines and grades, bench marks and cross sections.
  • Obtains, assembles and prepares data and maintains records; makes routine checks on data; utilizes departmental information systems to retrieve and enter information and prepare reports.

Other Job Functions

  • Performs standard tests and checks.
  • Drafts and prepares charts and exhibits.
  • Maintains supply and equipment inventories; prepares purchase requisitions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions

Typical office environment. May use standard office equipment and computer terminals. May involve exposure to a variety of operating mechanical equipment and loud noise and/or noxious odors. May include working in all types of weather conditions throughout the plant facility and collection system. May involve working in close proximity to or in conjunction with construction activities and heavy equipment, and may require exposure to a variety of weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Some knowledge of geometry, college algebra and trigonometry.
  • Some knowledge of field surveying and related computations.
  • Some knowledge of engineering measuring devices, instruments, laboratory and sampling equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to use engineering transits and levels.
  • Ability to make working drawings from rough drafts or notes.
  • Ability to utilize word processors, spread sheets, database managers, and similar applications.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.


Requirements

Original Entrance - Examination

Duties: Under supervision, is responsible for performing technical tasks related to the maintenance and operations of a sewage treatment plant.

Minimum Requirements: Graduation from a standard senior high school or the equivalent and two years of sub-professional engineering experience. Substitution: College or technical training beyond high school in engineering or mathematics may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Examination: The examination will consist of a written test weighted 100%. The minimum passing score on the written test will be 70% unless determined otherwise by the Director of Human Resources. Candidates must achieve a passing score to have their names placed on the eligible list.

The written test will assess candidates' knowledge, skill and ability in areas such as mathematics and computational ability; engineering concepts; principles of applied science and technology; comprehension of written and graphical materials; effective written communication and following written instructions; safety principles and practices.

Examination Process: All applicants will be advised by email if they have been admitted to the examination process. Applicants who do not receive a response to their application by Friday, May 12, 2023, should contact the Employee Selection Office at (312) 751-5100.

WRITTEN TEST: The written test will be administered on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences, 3857 W. 111th St., Chicago, IL 60655.

Candidates should report at 9:00 a.m. with the approved (printed) admission letter and driver's license or other form of photo identification. Calculators will be provided. The use of books, study guides, cell phones, tablets, smartwatches, laptops or other aids during the test is prohibited.

Original Entrance - Appointments

Appointments will be made from an eligible list with three categories: A (Exceptionally Well Qualified), B (Well Qualified) and C (Qualified). Candidates in the highest category will be given first consideration for appointment. The eligible list has a duration of three years. Appointment is subject to successfully passing a physical examination, a drug test and a criminal history background investigation.
