Duties: Performs professional site remediation work by monitoring investigatory and remediation activities at the field level. Supervises the collection and analysis of samples, assures site safety and assists the Engineer of Site Remediation in the analysis and presentation of data.
Salary/Pay Plans
The salary listed above is Step 1 in a structured pay plan. At 6 months of employment with the District, the salary will increase to Step 2: $126,028.76. At 18 months, the salary will increase to Step 3: $133,024.58. There are 9 total steps for TAM 17 of the pay plan (view full pay plan). These increases are based on service time in the job classification and require a 'Meets Standard' performance rating.
Requirements
Original Entrance - Examination
Absolute Requirements: Registration as a Professional Engineer or Professional Geologist in the State of Illinois. Possession of a valid driver's license.
Minimum Requirements: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university majoring in civil, environmental or chemical engineering, geology, geological sciences or hydrology and four years of experience in environmental site remediation, including at least two years as a project manager of site remediation activities in the field. SUBSTITUTION: Graduate study in any of the above-listed academic areas may be substituted for the required non-specialized experience on a year-for-year basis to a maximum of two years.
Examination: The examination will consist of a training and experience evaluation (T&E) weighted 40%, and an oral test, including a written exercise weighted 60%. Candidates must achieve a passing score to have their names placed on the eligible list.
The The T&E will assess candidates' knowledge, skill and ability in areas such as managing projects and project personnel; environmental remediation of contaminated properties.
The oral test will assess candidates' knowledge, skill and ability in areas such as technical aspects of environmental site remediation; environmental site remediation sampling techniques; summarizing and preparing technical documents; oral and written communication.
Examination Process: All applicants will be advised by email if they have been admitted to the examination process. Applicants who do not receive a response to their application by end of day, Friday, July 10, 2026 should contact the Employee Selection Office at (312) 751-5100.
Each candidate whose application is approved, will be emailed a link which will contain the T&E form for completion and return to the Employee Selection Office as specified in the T&E instructions.
ORAL TEST: The date for the oral test is to be determined. Candidates will be informed by email of the date, time and place of the oral test.
The use of books, study guides, cell phones, tablets, smartwatches, laptops or other aids during the test is prohibited.
Original Entrance - Appointments
Appointments will be made from an eligible list with three categories: A (Exceptionally Well Qualified), B (Well Qualified) and C (Qualified). Candidates in the highest category will be given first consideration for appointment. The eligible list has a duration of three years. Appointment is subject to successfully passing a physical examination, a drug test and a criminal history background investigation.
